Who We Are

The GATE Parent Association (Gifted and Talented Education Parent Association) is comprised of parents whose children are currently enrolled in the GATE Program of the Calgary Board of Education. Our parent association is committed to supporting the existence, continuity and quality of the GATE Program and gifted education overall. In addition to our role of supporting gifted education, the Association supports school staff to optimize educational environments for the students, provides a forum for parents to share ideas and concerns and offers educational opportunities to parents and teachers. . In collaboration with the Center for Gifted Education at the University of Calgary, we publish a newsletter which keeps parents current regarding the GATE program as well as providing information related to giftedness and gifted education. We support the Center for Gifted Education in providing parent education sessions to all parents of gifted children, not just those with children in the GATE Program.

Representatives from the GATE Parent Association Executive meet periodically with representatives from the Calgary Board of Education Student Services . This group serves as a communication link between the Calgary Board of Education GATE schools and parents and deals with topics pertaining to the program and gifted education in general. Occasionally, these meetings will include the principals of the various GATE schools.

The GATE Parent Association is a volunteer organization independent of the Calgary Board of Education.

GOALS OF THE GATE PARENT ASSOCIATION (ADAPTED FROM May 1992)

• To undertake FUNDRAISING to enhance the educational pursuits of the GATE Program
• To ADVOCATE for the GATE Program and the students and parents of the Program.
• To encourage and sponsor EDUCATION for parents and professional staff.
• To promote COMMUNICATION with the Calgary Board of Education, Alberta Learning and among parents and other stakeholders.
