Annual General Meeting & Social Skills Family Presentation

Dear GATE families,

Our first meeting of the GATE Parent Association will be a FAMILY event on SEPTEMBER 26, 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Queen Elizabeth High School, 512 18 St NW.

Bring your GATE student!

It will be a combo event – Annual General Meeting and speaker presentation. Please note the earlier time (we start at 6:00 pm, rather than our usual 6:30 pm).

Our presenter will be Michelle Springman, a registered psychologist. Ms. Springman will talk to us about Building Strong Social Skills: Helping our gifted students with tools to manage social anxieties and challenges.

Following a brief presentation, the students will have a break-out session with Ms. Springman, while the parents attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The AGM will take approximately 30 minutes.

The GPA serves the unique needs of GATE students and their families. All parents of GATE students are members of the GPA, and can participate in the Association. We focus on the following:

  1. Fundraising – The GPA casino funds are allocated across all GATE classrooms for enhanced educational materials, such as math contest fees, specialized science materials, advanced books, field trips, artists-in-residence, and technology. We also fundraise to support teacher professional development in giftedness.
  2. Parent Education – The GPA organizes presenters to facilitate family learning needs around giftedness and social-emotional development. Past presentations can be found on our website.
  3. Advocacy – GPA executives assist the CBE to support teacher professional development in giftedness. We also meet frequently with the CBE Gifted Specialist to advocate for gifted education and the needs of the program.

We need your help: We will be electing a new executive at our September 26th AGM, and we are looking for parents to step into leadership roles within the GPA. These roles can be reviewed on our website.

There is no cost for this event, but donations are always welcome and fund GATE teacher professional development. RSVP please to gatecalgary@gmail.com
